Werribee Open Range Zoo

Werribee is a great place to live, with lots of activities for kids. One of the highlights, and a must visit destination if you’re considering purchasing land in Werribee, is the Open Range Zoo located on K Road.

The zoo spans approximately 225 hectares and is right near Werribee Mansion on the Werribee River in Werribee Park. It’s part of Zoos Victoria, which also runs Melbourne Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary.

What makes Werribee’s zoo special is its African safari experience where you can see animals like rhinos, giraffes, zebras and antelopes in the wide open, picturesque savannah. On this 40-minute guided bus safari tour you get close and personal with the animals as your driver imparts useful information, making the experience a great learning adventure.

Another fun activity is the Pula Reserve Walking Trail, a leisurely 60-minute walk featuring many viewing platforms where you can see lots of animals on display, like gorillas, lions, monkeys and cheetahs. There are several play areas for children dotted throughout, making it an ideal place for families with small children to visit. Both the walking trail and 40-minute safari tour are included in the admission price.

Kids looking for even more adventure will be thrilled with Hippo Beach, where they can enjoy a splash in the water play area. There’s even the option to stay overnight at deluxe zoo campsites with a Slumber Safari. This includes amazing close-up animal encounters, drinks, snacks and dinner, unique night-time activities and a buffet breakfast.

Werribee Zoo is open from 9 am to 5 pm daily, but the last safari departs at 3.30 pm, so make sure you visit before then. Visitors under 3 years old are free, 4-5 year olds are free on weekends/public holidays and $13.60 on weekdays, and anyone 16+ is $30.80. Concessions, family package deals and group discounts are also available.
